Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus. They are very common, affecting millions of people around the world. While not a disease in itself, piles can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including –
- Bleeding – This is the most common symptom, and the blood is usually bright red and painless.
- Itching – The area around the anus may itch or feel irritated.
- Pain – This is less common, but some people may experience pain, especially when sitting or during bowel movements.
- Prolapse – In some cases, the hemorrhoids may prolapse, meaning they push out of the anus.
There are two main types of hemorrhoids
- Internal hemorrhoids: These are located inside the rectum and are usually painless.
- External hemorrhoids: These are located outside the anus and can be painful.
